Who is AEGBEE?

The Association for English-German Bilingual Education of Edmonton (AEGBEE) was established to support the English-German Bilingual School Program within the Edmonton Public School district for kindergarten to Grade 12. It was formed out of necessity to financially support this unique and special program and out of desire to keep the program active, creative, and effective.

AEGBEE consists of an executive team who are parent volunteers with children in the German Bilingual Program, principals and teachers from our 5 German Bilingual schools, as well as representation from Die Kleine Kinderschule, a German Language Advisor from German Central Agency for Schools Abroad/ZfA, Alberta Education, EPSB language consultants, and parents/caretakers of German Bilingual students currently enrolled in the program.

The Executive consists of 4 Officers—President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer, and 3 Directors—Director of Communications, Director of Promotions, and Director of Casino. We are currently working on a Parent Helpers Committee which will essentially support Executives by distributing small tasks that are needed throughout the school year.

What do we do?

The association strategically and financially supports the German Bilingual Program in Edmonton (K-12), one of the few German programs in Canada which lead to the internationally recognized Deutsches Sprachdiplom (DSD) language proficiency exams, by:

  • organizing and facilitating a source of revenue with a biannual casino,
  • managing and distributing these funds equitably to our 5 schools,
  • promoting the program in order to maintain and gain student enrollment via advertisements, social media, and various other avenues, and
  • organize and hold 1 AGM and 4 general meetings per school year.

How can you help?

Parent input is very important to a successful bilingual program. Join a general meeting; we need collaborative discussion from parents with children in all grades and schools so we can best support the program.

Your expertise in areas like leadership, accounting, social media, graphic design, marketing, and so on.

Your energy to be a part of our Parent Helper Committee to help out when called upon.

Volunteer at our biannual Casino: volunteers are needed to run our fundraising casino held approximately every 20 months.

How big of a commitment is AEGBEE?

AEGBEE meets only 5 times per school year, rotating meeting places at one of our 5 schools. We plan, organize, share ideas, report activities, report finances, and discuss any concerns, as well as any new ideas to could help support the program. Your commitment depends on your role, but generally speaking, the time commitment is minimal and meetings are generally 1 to 1.5 hours.
